Latest Report from Ecosantafe Colombia

New Home needed - Monkeys need to move out!

In May 2009 Wildlife Protection Foundation Chairman David Gill travelled to Colombia to see just how the project was progressing.  On arrival he was met with a very distraught project team and a massive urgent problem which posed a massive threat to the monkeys.     IDEA (Development Institute for Antioquia) sold the land where the Rehabilitation Centre was located. (La Pintada)  to FOGANSA (Cattle-raising Found of Antioquia).

It was impossible to make an agreement with FOGANSA because they  need the houses where we were working, other houses that are available are one kilometre of the reserve that meant the animal could not be monitored or cared for for the whole day.  Also FOGANSA needs to build new infrastructure and so have cut down many trees—trees that were the food and house of animals.

Deforestation in La Pintada

The lives and future of the monkeys and animals of the forest are being put at risk.   For those in Colombia it is an awful experience -  The keepers are very sad yet, mainly Simon because he planted the threes that were cut, he has looked after the free monkeys since they were babies.

Jerico

We can recover the forces to continue with our work.  Jerico Municipality and many nice people have come to our aid.  We are to move the Rehabilitation Centre to Jerico, we are staying in a private farm temporally while the Municipality give us a land in rent for 10 years, but the private farm and land of municipality are near, we want to buy a part of this farm so we can own the land without danger of loosing it again.  We think it is a great opportunity to have our own little reserve linked with a big regional reserve and can do a work for long time and assure the habitat for monkeys and other wildlife.

Jericó is a municipality of Antioquia.  It is located 2 ½ hours from Medellin, one of older towns of Antioquia.  It was founded in 1860.  It’s named Southwest’s Atenas because it is a beautiful and development town with big culture, and religiosity.  This is an environmental and touristic town.  Jericó has more 1500 ha.  of reserve for conservation and has all weathers (cold to hot).

The Rehabilitation Center

On 28th of May the rehabilitation center was relocated in Jericó.  Keepers of the zoo, veterinary doctor, biologist, and other professionals of the Zoo and some students of CES University help us with the move.

Since 24th of May Simón and other workers build the temporally cages in Jericó, the 28th of May the furniture was moved to Jericó and the 30th of May we moved all animals at same time with their refrigerators and food.   The animals at this moment are in temporally cages that are as big as La Pintada cages.  All cages are in the same place a little near one of other but the animals are comfortable.

Temporary cages in Jerico

The change of weather had bean a little hard to animals, mainly howler monkeys, but they are adapting good, until this moment they have bean a little bored but they are healthy.  Like animals, the people are adapting to new conditions too.  Simon was bored during first days in Jericó, more over there were a lot of work for do all day.  Now we are happier.

We are temporally in a Farm La Suiza, because we are doing a contract with municipality and environmental authority (Corantioquia), more over there are some business owners whom are interesting on help us, give us some land to protect it and do conservation in situ.

In Jericó the native monkeys are very curious with new monkeys.  They come down every day to see the new monkeys in their cages, but don’t touch, don’t eat their food, only watch.
