23.05.07 Ecolombia Foundation in 2007 (January – March)

The foundation have continues with a big work.  During the months of January – March we have received 12 monkeys:  2 younger monkeys and 10 baby monkeys.  Babies are in Medellin under medical supervision and special cares because they are very little and very susceptible to diseases.

Nowadays in Ecolombia there are 31 monkeys:  10 babies, a group of 9 youthful monkeys, other group of 6 youthful monkeys and other group of 6 adults that is ready for liberation.

Luisa (right) arrived on June of 2007 and the same day she died, she was very sick.

Adriana arrived in June of 2007.  She is a daughter of Fidelia (a free monkey of La Pintada).  Adriana and Fidelia were attacked for a male monkey because the male monkeys kill the babies of a group for the females monkeys have a new babies of them.  Adriana and Fidelia received medical attention in La Pintada, but the male monkey come back and he attacked them once more.  Adriana was bad, she have tow big hurts, one on her back and other on her arm, then we decided that the best to she was carry on to Medellín where there are more specialists and possibilities for her.

We hope that on the next month we can to liberate the group of 6 adult monkeys.  This group don’t will be liberate in the rehabilitation center because in the forest there are many monkeys now, but we find a natural reserve where there aren’t danger for them and we with the help of Corantioquia does a study about the natural populations that live there and we found that is possible and viable do liberation there.

The reproduction program in captivity of the Crax alberti (paujil) continue without a positive result yet, we are waiting for eggs on May that is the time to reproduction.  Nowadays there are 8 paujiles.

The reproduction program in captivity of Ara ambigua (guacamayas), is better.  Two weeks before we found 3 eggs and we think that on one week more we will get a babies.  For this moment there are 8 guacamayas.

We are working on these programs with a research Ornithology Team of University of Antioquia and other researchers of this university.  There more we have agreements with the University of Antioquia and National University to work together and the students can do their thesis and practices in the foundation.

There more, the rehabilitation center is use like a temporal house for many animals that received food, care and veterinary attention while they are relocation in other place for the environmental authorities. In this moment we have 3 parrots, 2 owls and 1 mantled howler.

The productive alternatives are good.  Nowadays we have 20 women in La Pintada and on February we started with a new group of women in Medellin.  All women are single mothers’ head of family.  With the women of La Pintada we are working the plush monkeys and the new group is on capacitating with a woman of La Pintada who is teaching to them how to make plushes.

In this moment we have only 50 plush monkeys of different references, 50 slippers small of capuchino and 60 scarves small of saimiri and red howler.  We don’t have more existents because we sell all plushes that we had to One World Project and a new customer in Canada.

The production of handmade necklaces is stop because we need a new permission for production and exportation because these necklaces have natural seeds and is necessary have a crop to produce this seeds.

The production of soaps continued stop because the new chemical engineer don’t found the original formula and he is doing test for looking for it.

23.04.07 Ecolombia in 2006 - Annual Report

The foundation has continued with the operation of the Farallones Rehabilitation center for Fauna in the municipality of La Pintada. There, the rehabilitation and reintroduction activities of the red howler monkey Allouata seniculus, continues with success.  During 2006 the foundation received 44 originating monkeys from several cities of Colombia like Pereira, Bucaramanga, Cali and other places of Antioquia.  19 of them died as consequence of ills and undernourishment, several of them were baby monkeys because the people that have monkeys in their house don’t know how these animals care.

On February a group of 6 howler monkeys was liberated, to which we made an ethological monitoring with the purpose of evaluate the success of this liberation and propose improvement measures for future liberations.  This reintroduction was very successful, these 6 monkeys are in the high part of Rehabilitation center and on February of this year a new monkey was born.

The reproduction program in captivity of the Crax alberti and the Ara ambigua, continue without a positive result yet, although we improved the habitats with more environmental enriched and varied their diets with nourishment complements and some natural seeds.

The productive alternatives were reactivated with the plush monkeys’ production and handmade necklaces. It was still pending the restart of the soaps production, which was hoped, was reestablished for the month of July, nevertheless don’t have be possible to begin the production of soaps because the chemical engineer resigned on October of  2006 and we has start again with other person.

17.08.06 Rescued Howler Monkey Released to the Wild - has baby

Colombia and South Lakes Wild Animal Park are celebrating news just in that one of those rescued Red Howler Monkeys, which underwent successful rehabilitation and was released back to the forest has just been photographed with a baby of her own.

This is fantastic news - these monkeys who have gone through terrible, horrific starts in life can, with the right care and effort, have successful futures as wild monkeys.

“This baby is a light of hope that reinforces our commitment with our conservation cause” -Jorge Villa, Colombia

A big thank you has to go out to people from all over the World  who have adopted and supported these rescued howler monkeys, the money from which goes directly to fund their rehabilitation and release back into the wild tropical forest in Colombia.
